چکیده
Whale sharks off the western coast of India have suffered high levels fishing pressure in past, and today continue to be caught small-scale fisheries as by-catch. Additionally, coastlines this region host very large growing human populations that are undergoing rapid development. This exacerbates ongoing anthropogenic threats species such pollution, habitat loss, ship traffic. For these reasons, there is an urgent need for data on movement patterns whale Indian Ocean. Here, we address issue by providing first horizontal movements tagged northern Arabian Sea state Gujarat. From 2011 2017, eight individuals, ranging from 5.4 8 m were monitored using satellite telemetry. Tag retention varied 1 137 days, with traveling distances 34 – ∼2,230 km. Six individuals remained close their tagging locations, although two displayed wide into Sea, following frontal zones between water masses different sea surface temperatures. We explore relationship physical biological processes region.

An Unprecedented Aggregation of Whale Sharks, Rhincodon typus, in Mexican Coastal Waters of the Caribbean Sea
Whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, are often perceived as solitary behemoths that live and feed in the open ocean. To the contrary, evidence is accumulating that they are gregarious and form seasonal aggregations in some coastal waters. One such aggregation occurs annually north of Cabo Catoche, off Isla Holbox on the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico. Here we report a second, much denser aggregation of ...
متن کاملWhale Sharks, Rhincodon typus, Aggregate around Offshore Platforms in Qatari Waters of the Arabian Gulf to Feed on Fish Spawn
Whale sharks, Rhincodon typus, are known to aggregate to feed in a small number of locations in tropical and subtropical waters. Here we document a newly discovered major aggregation site for whale sharks within the Al Shaheen oil field, 90 km off the coast of Qatar in the Arabian Gulf. Whale sharks were observed between April and September, with peak numbers observed between May and August. De...

Laser photogrammetry was found to be a promising new cost-effective technique for measuring free-swimming whale sharks Rhincodon typus. Photogrammetric measurements were more precise than visual size estimates by experienced researchers, with results from the two methods differing by 9· 8 ± 1· 1% (mean ±s.e.). A new metric of total length and the length between the fifth gill and first dorsal f...
متن کاملAssociation of whale sharks (Rhincodon typus) with thermo-biological frontal systems of the eastern tropical Pacific
Satellite tracking of 27 whale sharks in the eastern tropical Pacific, examined in relation to environmental data, indicates preferential occupancy of thermo-biological frontal systems. In these systems, thermal gradients are caused by wind-forced circulation and mixing, and biological gradients are caused by associated nutrient enrichment and enhanced primary productivity. Two of the frontal s...

There were 479 reported whale shark Rhincodon typus encounters between 1999 and 2011 at the island of Utila, which forms part of the Meso-American Barrier Reef System (MBRS) in the western Caribbean Sea. The majority of R. typus were found to feed on small bait fish associated with various tuna species. Ninety-five individual R. typus, ranging from 2 to 11 m total length (LT ), were identified ...
